Julia sang along with the CD as she drove her Jaguar down Interstate 80. She had just finished a tour of the Point Richmond project and was pleased with the progress. The project was now ninety percent complete and she had reservation of purchases for all of the luxury condos. She made up her mind to take some time off from developing once the project was completed. She wasn’t quite sure what she would do, but whatever she decided, it would include Reggie.
“Maybe she’d help Reggie with the new building,” she said, and contemplated her options. After helping True Worship acquire the building, she doubted Reggie would ever ask her for anything else. He was too much of a man for that, and he was her man.
They’d been dating for eight weeks now and in her opinion things were going very well. They talked on the phone at least once a day, even when one of them was out of town. They ate dinner together at least twice a week and enjoyed countless lunch dates together. She even had the garage reserve a parking spot for him, so he wouldn’t have to waste time looking for one. “You can spend the time you save with me,” is what she told him when at first he objected.
The closer they grew, the harder it became to conceal their relationship. Reggie didn’t want to publicize the relationship until they were absolutely sure they were headed down the aisle. She agreed; in fact, she respected him for it.
The ringing of Julia’s cell phone interrupted her thoughts. “Hey, you.”
“Hello, love,” Reggie said.
“Are you packed yet?” Julia had convinced him to accompany her to her parents’ home for their fiftieth wedding anniversary party on Saturday. To persuade him, she had to promise to have him back in time for Sunday morning service.
“That’s what I’m calling about. What’s the attire for this party?”
“It’s not really a party. Think of it as a family barbeque.”
“A barbeque?” he questioned.
“Yes. My parents didn’t want to do anything fancy. They just wanted the family to get together. Oh, don’t forget to bring your trunks, just in case you decide to swim. And don’t forget your tennis shoes, my family loves shooting hoops. Do you like horseback riding? If you do, we can do that, too.” She took a breath and slowed down. “I know I’m rambling, but I’m excited about you meeting my family.”
“I can tell you’re excited, but do you think we’ll have enough time to do all of those activities and still make it to your parents’ home?”
It took a moment for Julia to understand his question. “I’m sorry, honey. I guess I didn’t make myself clear. All of these activities are on my parents’ estate.”
“Oh, I see.” He was quiet for a moment. “What time does our flight leave?”
“CJ and Angie will meet us at the Oakland Airport at seven-thirty a.m. We’re scheduled to take off at eight.”
“You never did tell me how much I owe you for my ticket,” he stated.
